Sustainable Adhesive Formulations for Flexible Packaging
Sustainability is transforming the flexible packaging adhesive industry. With global pressure to reduce plastic waste, brands are shifting toward recyclable mono-material packaging and compostable films. Adhesive manufacturers must innovate to meet these changes without compromising performance.
One challenge is ensuring that adhesives do not hinder the recyclability of packaging materials. For example, an adhesive compatible with polyethylene-based mono-material structures allows the entire package to be recycled together, avoiding costly separation processes.
Bio-based adhesives, derived from renewable sources, are emerging as a greener alternative to petrochemical-based products. Additionally, solvent-free adhesives are becoming a preferred choice due to their low carbon footprint and reduced VOC emissions.
Companies are also adopting life-cycle analysis (LCA) to evaluate the environmental impact of adhesive production and use. Partnerships between adhesive suppliers, packaging converters, and brand owners are key to developing solutions that align with extended producer responsibility (EPR) regulations worldwide.
